Potential Perils from Flax Seed Omega 3′s
Flax seed is a great source of omega 3, according to some experts, but there are a lot of unexplored and unpublicized problems with this new and popular source of nutrition. Before you replace your fish oil supplements with flax seed oil, consider these issues:
1. Flax seed contain omega 3′s that need further “processing”
This means that your body must do additional work on the omega 3’s before they are usable. Since the body cannot synthesize or process omega 3, giving it a questionable form of the essential nutrient is essentially giving it a nutrient it may not be able to use at all, and certainly cannot use to the fullest extent.
2. Flax seed oil impacts estrogen and hormone levels
For this reason, it is often prescribed to post-menopausal women as a way to control hormones after menopause. However, for pre-menopausal and pregnant women, changing hormone levels can be highly problematic and can even create complications during pregnancy or in getting pregnant.
3. Flax seed oil is simply lower in DHA
DHA is the specific type of omega 3 that your body needs for heart health, memory function and immune system efficiency. Flax seed oil not only has less of this omega 3 fatty acid, but, as we already discussed, the DHA it does contain is not in “ready to use” form.
As you can see, there are a lot of things to think about before you switch from fish oil to flax seed oil. Of course, fish oil has its own problems, since many cheap, generic brands are made from fish like tuna and mackerel that live in polluted waters and may contain heavy metals and other contaminants.
The best way to insure you are getting the best omega 3 fatty acids possible is to take a pure, tested salmon oil supplement that is guaranteed toxin-free and molecularly optimized for the best effects possible from omega 3 fatty acids.
